On The Land Where The Learning Happens

Some of the most important lessons I have learned did not come from a classroom. They came from being on the land and water. From watching the tides, harvesting alongside family, listening to Elders, gathering medicines, planting seeds, and learning to pay attention to the world around me.

At Xaayda Wellness Society, we believe the land is one of our greatest teachers. Every season brings new opportunities to learn. Spring reminds us of renewal and growth. Summer brings abundance and harvesting. Autumn teaches preparation and preservation. Winter gives us time to reflect, plan, and share stories. Each season carries its own knowledge, and each has something to teach us if we are willing to listen.

This year, our work will take us into gardens, forests, shorelines, and gathering places across Haida Gwaii. We will be documenting traditional foods and medicines, collecting seeds, learning from knowledge holders, creating educational resources, and exploring ways to strengthen food sovereignty within our communities. Along the way, we will share stories, photographs, lessons learned, and the people who make this work possible.

Not every project will be large. Some of the most meaningful moments happen quietly—a child planting their first seed, an Elder sharing a teaching, a family gathering food together, or a plant returning to a place where it once thrived. These are the moments that build strong communities and keep knowledge alive.

Through this journal, we invite you to follow along as our projects unfold. We will share both successes and challenges, discoveries and reflections, and the many lessons that come from spending time on the land. Our hope is that these stories inspire others to reconnect with the foods, medicines, teachings, and places that have sustained our people for generations.

The work begins with a single step onto the land. From there, the learning never truly ends.
